IWCF Well Intervention Pressure Control Level 3
For personnel carrying out well intervention operations where pressure control and well integrity must be maintained throughout the job.
Course overview
This programme is designed for personnel carrying out well intervention operations where pressure control and well integrity must be maintained throughout the job. It develops the practical pressure-control knowledge expected from equipment operators and field personnel working with completion equipment, wireline and/or coiled tubing. The course links well integrity principles to the actual barriers, pressure-control equipment and operating sequences used during intervention work.
Minimum 20 hours with one optional intervention discipline; minimum 24 hours with two optional disciplines. Assessment time is additional.
Why this course matters
Well intervention operations frequently involve opening or changing the pressure-control envelope while the well remains live. Operators therefore need to understand not only the equipment they use, but also how barriers are established, verified and maintained while tools are run, retrieved or changed. The course focuses on recognising changes in well condition, maintaining control during normal operations and responding correctly to equipment or barrier problems.
Who should attend
- Wireline and coiled tubing operators
- Field engineers and senior operators
- Other personnel directly involved in carrying out pressure-control activities during well intervention operations
Prerequisite
Candidates should have practical experience relevant to the intervention discipline selected for certification.
Course content
- Well integrity assurance and intervention risk management
- Pressure fundamentals, hydrostatic pressure and basic pressure calculations
- Primary and secondary well control and barrier philosophy
- Barrier identification, verification, testing and acceptance
- Influx characteristics, gas behaviour, migration and shut-in considerations
- Well kill principles and response to pressure-control events
- Completion operations and completion equipment
- Wellheads, Christmas trees, tubing hangers, packers and safety valves
- Pressure-control equipment, operating limits and testing requirements
- Wireline applications, surface pressure-control equipment, lubricators, stuffing boxes / grease injection and BOP arrangements
- Wireline barrier management, testing and common contingency response
- Coiled tubing applications, injector and stripper functions, BOP stack configuration and pressure-control barriers
- Coiled tubing shearing, sealing, testing, operating limits and contingencies
- Operational communication, handover and response to abnormal conditions
Assessment and certification
- Two compulsory IWCF written assessment components covering Completion Operations and Completion Equipment.
- One additional written assessment for each selected optional intervention discipline (Wireline and/or Coiled Tubing).
- Each assessment component is 60 minutes.
- Candidates must pass all nominated assessment components; the required IWCF pass mark applies to each component.
- Certificate validity: IWCF certification is normally valid for 2 years.
Frequently asked questions
Who is Level 3 for?
Wireline and coiled tubing operators, field engineers, senior operators and others directly involved in pressure-control activities during well intervention.
Can I take Wireline or Coiled Tubing only?
Yes — both are optional disciplines. One discipline needs a minimum of 20 hours; two need a minimum of 24 hours.
How is it assessed?
Two compulsory written components (Completion Operations and Completion Equipment) plus one for each selected discipline, 60 minutes each. All nominated components must be passed.
How long is the certificate valid?
IWCF certification is normally valid for 2 years.
